The Lovable Teddy Bear

My story is about my 10-year -old son Logan who has spina bifida and is in a wheelchair. He touches people's lives everyday, but this particular story gets to me.
He has a friend that is 8-years-old that rides the bus with him. Her name is Payton, but he calls her Pae Pae. Payton has Down syndrome and is in a wheelchair like Logan is. Well, one day Payton got sick and had to be put in the hospital. He would talk about her every night and say how much he missed her. He decided he wanted to go to the hospital to see her. I said OK and thought he would forget about it; well I was wrong. He talked about it all week.

Finally, Friday came, and he came home that afternoon from school with what hospital she was in and what room. He then told me that he had to bring her his teddy bear that he got for Christmas. He knew it would make her feel better. So we got up Saturday morning. He is usually excited about his handicapped basketball he has on Saturdays, but not today. He was excited about going to see Payton.

We finished the game and headed to the hospital with the teddy bear. I did not even know if we were going to be able to see her since she had just got off of the ventilator. We got to the hospital and the nurses reluctantly let us go in to see her. At first when we got in the room, she was sitting on her grandmother's lap just laying there looking pretty sick. The moment Logan got in the room and he said hi to Payton she got this big smile on her face and her dad and grandmother starting smiling also. Logan then proceeded to give her his big teddy bear he had gotten for Christmas, and Payton's smile just got bigger. One of the nurses came into the room and was amazed that her oxygen levels were at 100%. Her levels had not gotten that high since she was in the hospital. As he continued to talk to her, she became more and more awake. Logan then asked told her that she needed to become a cheerleader for his basketball team. Before we knew we had three nurses in the room marveling at how she was responding to Logan. We soon left and Payton got out of the hospital that next week.

Logan still talks about her and brought her dad's information home last week so that I can get a uniform for Payton to join the handicapped cheerleaders. The crazy part about his friendship with Payton is that she is nonverbal, but that does not matter to Logan he carries on the conversion for both of them. He even dances with her by holding on to her knee and moving his wheelchair.

Logan
will do anything to get someone to laugh. That's what makes him so special. Even though he has a disability he does not even acknowledge it is there. Anything that anyone else can do he can do in his own way and I do mean anything. He is quite amazing. This is probably the best story I have about Logan's compassion; he feels for people but I have many more stories. Every person he's met he makes them feel special in some way. It does not matter what they look like, if they can talk or if they are older or younger than him, he is just a people person and wants to get to know you.
